Tengo La Voz: I Have The Voice

Tengo La Voz, which is Spanish for “I Have The Voice,” was a 2-year multidisciplinary program for Latino youth in Sonoma County, California. The goal was to provide students with access and training to the tools of self expression. In 2009, I produced and directed a 30-minute documentary that took viewers on a behind-the-scenes look at the workshops, summer camps, and other exciting opportunities in media production, art, and literature, all designed to help tomorrow’s leaders find their voice. The program also featured examples of the creative work the students completed.

List of segments

1. TV Studio Workshop – Year One (Segment Writer & Video Editor): As a mentor myself, I helped to organize many of the Tengo La Voz events, including a TV Studio Workshop at the Community Media Center in Santa Rosa, California. This workshop, conducted by Community Media Center staff, aimed to show these teenagers how to create powerful, meaningful media for the whole community.
2. Animation Workshop (Segment Writer & Video Editor): After learning the TV Studio, the TLV Media students moved on to the Animation Lab. This segment documents the creation of a clever short stop-motion animated film called, “Things Happen.”
3. Mural Project — ArtStart (Segment Writer & Video Editor): In addition to the media arts, Tengo La Voz engaged visual artists as well. This segment goes behind the scenes to see what goes into the making of public art pieces at a Santa Rosa nonprofit called ArtStart.
